Fight against new “lottery” liquor policy

Lok Satta Visakhapatnam is agitating against the new liquor policy announced by the Andhra Pradesh government. Lambasting the new lottery based policy as one that boosts liquor syndicates in the state rather than curb them as promised by the Chief Minister, Lok Satta leader Bhisetti Babji led protests by the party and called for a round table of all parties to join forces to fight this menace. On June 26, the party leaders and workers combined with their counterparts in CPM and CPI to stage a ‘sit-down’ protest and attempted to block the lottery procedure. Police forcibly arrested them and moved them to the police station to break up the protest. They were released later in the evening.

The Lok Satta Party and CPM/CPI combine held similar protests on June 26 in many places in Andhra Pradesh. The party president, Jayaprakash Narayan, was also arrested in Hyderabad along with several party leaders and volunteers.
